Oral Cavity Cancer

Oral cancer encompasses a range of cancers that affect any part of the oral cavity. This includes: lips, tongue, salivary glands and mouth. Oral cancers are the seventh most diagnosed type of cancer in Australia in 2013 and estimated to have stayed the same in 2017.

Most oral cancers are preventable and/or the risks can be reduced. Common risk factors such as tobacco use, excessive alcohol intake, periodontal disease and other chronic diseases.
If not detected early, oral cancer can require surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and may be fatal.

  • Oral cancer rates rose in Australia between 2009 and 2013. From 3.7 per 100 000 to 4.2 per 100 000
  • Tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption are contributors to oral cancer
