Welcome to Woonona Dentists

Our Story

Dr. Ivan Young joined Dr. Paul Blatch and his associates in 1975 in a dental practice founded by Dr. McGovern. As a practice they offered quality dental services to families of many generations in this region, mainly at the Kembla Street, and later established their Woonona branch in the early 1980s.

Dr. Beena Kurian and Mr. Shinu Joseph took over the ownership and management of Dr. Ivan Young’s share in these practices and formed Woonona Dentists in November 2014.

Dr. Natasha Kushalani, Dr. Abha Verma, Dr. Irena Stojkovski, and Dr. Pat Pandey joined the practice to continue the tradition of high quality dental care when Dr. Ivan Young retired in 2016.

In July 2017, we opened the doors of our branch practice in Dapto, called Dapto Dentists to better cater to the dental needs of families who live in the southern Illawarra region.

We strive to continue the tradition of caring for the dental health of several generations of patients over the 50 years of its existence.

Why is my tooth sore?
Toothaches are the human body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. This could be a cracked tooth, a dental cavity, an exposed tooth root or even gum disease. We recommend that you schedule an appointment with us as soon as possible if you happen to be experiencing tooth pain. We have emergency appointments available every day, so call us on (02) 4210 9078 or Book online
What should I do if I get a tooth knocked out?
If a tooth is knocked out, you should pick it up by the crown and rinse it in milk. If milk is unavailable have the person who lost the tooth clean it with his/her saliva being careful not to scrape or touch the root of the tooth if possible. Carefully orient the tooth (so it is facing the right way) and carefully push it back into the socket. If you are unable to do this wrap the tooth in cling film. Either way immediately make your way to a dentist. Getting to a dentist quickly is critical if the tooth is to be saved, we leave always room for Dental Emergencies.
How can I improve my oral hygiene?
In order to keep your teeth and gums healthy, we encourage flossing and daily brushing to maintain proper hygiene. Using mouthwashes, cleaning your tongue and eating a healthy diet which limits sugary food and soft drinks can also help. We also recommend regular visit to a dentist for a comprehensive oral assessment at least once in 6 months.
Why are regular dental check-up and clean so important?
Comprehensive dental assessments provide your dental practitioner with an opportunity to clean your teeth and detect problems as early as possible. A simple filling at the right time or identifying a cavity early could spare you from needing a root canal or tooth extraction later down the track.
We recommend for patients to receive a dental assessment on a regular six monthly basis. This ensures that you receive a professional clean to effectively remove plaque build-up so that oral hygiene is maintained. It also gives our dentists more time to identify any problems before they escalate into bigger issues.

A typical dental appointment involves a careful inspection of your mouth, teeth, gums and oral tissue. Your dentist will be looking for any signs of tooth decay and cavities, loose or broken teeth, damaged tooth fillings or gum disease. This is why a regular dental visit is a necessary part of preventive dental care coupled with flossing, brushing and a healthy diet.

This is the reason that we have made this assessment Gap Free/$150, so that everyone can afford the visit to a dentist.
Please visit our services page for further information.

Why do I have to give notice if I’m not going to keep a dental appointment?
Your appointment time has been specifically set aside for you. At Woonona Dentists, we do not overbook patients. For us to provide you with optimum care we need to allocate an appropriate amount of time to carry out the necessary treatment. Should you fail to notify us that you are unable to attend your appointment, it will affect three of our team members’ time and disadvantages other patients.

We understand that from time to time unforeseen circumstances arise. So please notify us at least 24 hours prior to your appointment if you are unable to attend. This gives us the opportunity to offer your appointed time to another patient.
